Why does my laptop get really hot?

I own a gateway. I recently resorted it to factory settings cause it was bogged down with memory and wouldn’t budge for anything. It is working much better but the one problem that was actually in reviews on my laptop, it gets WAY too hot. I have to keep a small desk fan next to it but that doesn’t help. I don’t really understand why it does this. =/
Thanks for answering.

You say you had to re format the computer because it was getting slow, is this because the laptop is old?, old laptops will generate allot of heat usually due to dust, you should try simply cleaning out the vents with a vacuum cleaner, and try to keep the laptop on flat, stable surfaces.
Another thing that would help would be to do a BIOS upgrade, you may have to take the laptop to a technician to do so though as it can require some skill, a new revision of the BIOS may make the fan in the laptop work differently, the BIOS in the laptop now probably only makes the fan startup when the laptop gets too hot, but a new BIOS revision may make the fan be on at a low speed, but on constantly, keep the laptop much cooler, this would be something worth looking into, if you give me the model number of the laptop I can help further, my email is mbutton8@bigpond.com. Btw your cute Lol.
A whole lot of electronics packed into a small area and all working is going to make anything hot.
If it is working it works and if reviews say it works hot then so be it.
Try Nvidia monitor to monitor your temperatures

Have you checked that the vent holes aren’t clogged with dust?
Computers (and all other electrical devices) generate heat. There is less room in a laptop for that heat to dissipate.
it could be because your fun is clogged with dust. Do try to clean it out.
If that doesn’t help, get a laptop cooling station.
Cause the owner of the Laptop is hot. lol, uhmmm get an intercooler for it, all electronics get hot especially if they are small and run for a long time, intercooler will make it last longer as well.
I have an HP laptop that does the same thing….all the vent slots and the cooling fans, take the vacuum to them, you would be suprised how much dust they will take in.
A friend had a similar problem. With techi help he got into the activity monitor. This showed that his anti virus software was using all the available processor. Killing this process dropped the temperature immediately, and made his machine run faster – it had more free processor capacity.
Get your processes checked, see if you need to adjust one of them. You need virus protection, but you don’t need it to be taking over the computer!
Good luck.
