What is the best small OS to run on an old laptop?
My dad gave me his old laptop for when we go on vacations since I have a desktop.
This thing is a piece of crap-not even gonna bother posting specs
I’ve been reading that a fun thing to do on old computers is install small OS’s like linux, ubuntu, or all those variations. I’ve never heard of doing any of this before; what are the advantages and disadvantages? and how could i do this (legally)

I’d suggest gentoo:

you would need an old version of linux as the modern versions are all bloated up, look at the minimum specs, you may find good old windows 98 or 2000 is best
get hold of dos 6.22 and windows 3.11 and have fun finding old software games. turbo pascal for dos or windows or even turbo c++ for windows if your into programming media player classic and sound drivers hunting oh the fun of it.
you wasted your time and cost you points to ask again, because all o/s has different requirements, such as cpu speed hard drive size and the like so ask again, and some one will have the answer, even I could most likely help to do it legally, get out your pocket book I have xp pro with 233mgh processor on old compaq that doesn’t even have usb port, the big problem is in the video, mine is only 2mb. so limited to very few programs that require at least 16mb if not more. hope this helps

The specs do matter a lot.
