Ultra old Compaq LTE Laptop review
:For special interested: I had this laptop for a long time, and decided to make another “silent review”. Here are most of the specs; Compaq LTE/286, 12 MHz Intel 80C286, 640Kb ram, CGA Display adapter and 4bit grayscale wide flat display, DOS 6.22 (3.3 or 3.31 orginal), 21Mb 3,5inch harddrive, 1.2Meg floppy drive -it reads 1.44mb disks, but cannot write, but it prefer 720k disks and has about 5hrs of battery time (!). I have lost the power-supply (or, actually the previous owner did) so while I used a temporary one, the backlight of the display got busted. Probably bacause of to high voltage (7Volts, it should actually only have 6Volt power supply or so, 4.8 – 5.5 on battery, and here i put 7?… damn) There is nothing else wrong with it, no bad sectors on harddrive, a Connor model 4021, who have a reputation to fail. Just recently I have replaced the CMOS battery. Good thing I found a copy of the diagnostics disk (bios)… Since it need special software to change\flash CMOS\Bios settings. There is not much more it can be used for, I usually write something in WordPerfect 5.1 every now and then, sometimes several years between, just because… well, its fun to read something I wrote several years ago.

Just imagine that there was laptop with 5.25 HDD in them. I’m serious. There was a lot of this kind of laptops in late 80-s and early 90-s…
daand,, i dont think CD roms became common place till around 1990 LOL they were out there,, just not in all computers,, sooo,, 3.5 floppys were the main thing !!! when i went to school,, were were using those 5 inch floppys,, the ones that the computers had to Actually boot from,,there wuz no
operation system on the computer,,,
people always talkso badlt about dell but they are really great machines
I know and I still miss my dell laptop.
you whats funny
back then tthey were small and thick
now they are big and skinny
That laptop looks more confusing then those today!
its the ports
Wow this laptop is very old and the screen is non color
I remeber when it was hardcore when i had 10GB in my desktop. lol!
Da9eI, Not just another video, this one stands out.
damn computer so old it in the black and white days
Wow.. How they have changed over the years.
That thing had a very defined clicking keyboard. You could also turn on and off the key-clicks, but they were so loud it didn’t matter.
Keep it running, that thing is awesome!
vendes para portugual
you thats a cool laptop. if you up the ram it would probably run 3.1
@Dell0304 I belive it was upgradeable to 4 megs of ram back in the days, however finding parts for theese old computers are next to impossible nowdays. And if I were able to find a memory card, its would be expensive.
@Da9eI yeah, good point.
@Dell0304
windows 3.1 would be slow. it has a 286 youknow.
windows 3.0 is the best it could run
@nelizmastr well, at least it can run windows. id put 2 or 3.0 on there.
@Dell0304 windows 2 isnt a good idea. its not a very good OS. for a 286, DOS is the best way to go.
@nelizmastr just sayin, DOS is a little too basic for me. win 3.0 then. but dos is ok. its just too basic for me.
@Da9eI You can put Windows 3.0 on it. I’ve yet tried to run it on a 286 with 640KB of RAM and 20MB hard drive, well it’s slow but runs (it was quite funny hearing the hard drive’s stepper motor frenetically seeking the heads to load Windows
)
@mima14031985 If it had a normal resolution color display I would consider trying. I like it the way it is. ah.. I remenber those stepper motor harddrives, they were fantastic (but slow). However this computer have the modern type voice coil actuator harddrive design. I do have a copy of windows 1.0\1.01, somewhere..
@Da9eI I installed Win 3.0 on a Samsung S5000, which have a screen like your laptop’s one, but not as crisp and well contrasted (it’s barely readable). Even on this screen Win 3.0 is still usable, so I think it’s worth a try on your laptop. Well, if you want, of course
My Samsung S5000 had a SCSI stepper motor drive (made by Micropolis) but was dead, so I had to replace it with another but with voice coil actuator, so not anymore stepper motor noises from that thing…
