In the summer of 2008 the annual E3 games show was held. Free ArticlesThis show turned out to be one of the least interesting in years. No new consoles were announced nor were any major new games announced from any of the well known franchises.

In particular Nintendo’s presentation lacked anything to make gamers excited. Their best effort came with Wii Music, which has since been released with poor sales and unfavourable reviews. The only item that really caused excitement was the brief but fairly shocking announcement that GTA: Chinatown Wars would be released on the DS.

The announcement really came as a surprise since GTA is best known for its adult content while the Nintendo DS and the Nintendo DSi console are known for their family friendly games.

Fans of the series feared that GTA: Chinatown Wars DS would have its content toned down to fit in better with the type of game typically found on the console. GTA developers Rockstar have stated that they would not be comfortable doing this and that Nintendo never asked them to tone the content down. Toning the content down to anything that would make the game suitable for even a 12+ age rating would leave very little content in GTA: Chinatown Wars.

Themes included in the series include, drugs use and dealing, murder (in some cases just for fun) and prostitution. Many are surprised that Nintendo are allowing such content to be released on their console, but many more games players are happy to finally see some mature content on the portable console.

The new Grand Theft Auto game is sure to gain a high amount of sales after the success of the Xbox 360 and PS3 editions of the series. Whether or not GTA: Chinatown Wars DS marks the start of a more open-minded view from Nintendo on adult games or whether is it is a one off remains to be seen.

Considering how well Research In Motion did with their last generation of BlackBerry smartphones, can they possibly top it with their newest line? After all, they doubled their U.S. Free Articlesmarket share from the second quarter 2007 to the same period in 2008. So how could they do any better than that? The answer is not clear now, but they’re certainly shooting for the moon this time around.

The ensemble begins with the highly anticipated BlackBerry Bold. Announced in May at WES 2008, the Bold is set to arrive on major GSM carriers by the end of the summer. It has faced various delays, much to RIM’s detriment, but the device still promises to be the best BlackBerry to date.

Rather than sticking to the strictly corporate market RIM sought with previous BlackBerry models, the Bold has taken a leap into the consumer sector. Instead of a small amount of on-board memory, the Bold has a full gigabyte. While this doesn’t match up with some other multimedia phone giants, it represents a vast improvement over previous BlackBerry models, and could be just what RIM customers are looking for. The 3G radio also helps separate this device, as it is the first such offering by Research In Motion.

RIM also has an entry-level phone planned for a fall release: the BlackBerry Pearl 8220. This was leaked as early as April 2008, and many thought it would be dubbed the Kickstart. It is the first major flip model by RIM, and is intended for the first-time BlackBerry user. It will not feature a 3G radio like the Bold, but it will still provide a good experience for younger consumers. The price tag, $50 with a contract, will make it even more enticing as will the increasingly inviting games and BlackBerry software geared for personal and casual users being developed for it.

As a follow-up to the Curve, RIM has also developed the BlackBerry Javelin. It features a design similar to the Bold, and a keyboard similar to the Curve. This will satisfy yet another sector of the market. Because it will not feature a 3G radio, the Javelin will work well on such U.S. operators as T-Mobile, which don’t have the 3G coverage that ATT has.

Finally, RIM plans to make a splash in the consumer market with the BlackBerry 9530. This has been dubbed both the Thunder and the Storm, though the model number holds up. This is the company’s answer to the iPhone. It features a full touch screen, using Haptics technology. It will be the first RIM model to not feature a mechanical keyboard. Where the iPhone wants to reach the business market, RIM wants to reach the consumer sector. Time will only tell if each is successful.

The year 2008 has brought us a new wave of smartphones, from the iPhone 3G to the Android G1. Free ArticlesHowever, for many phone fans out there, nothing topped the dual offering from Research In Motion: The BlackBerry Bold and the BlackBerry Storm. Both hit the market with different degrees of fanfare. The Bold faced lengthy delays before hitting shelves in the U.S., and the Storm’s marketing scheme went off seemingly without a hitch. Both devices are in demand. The question, of course, is how much are they going to cost?

Remember, when choosing a phone it pays to check out the carrier behind it. When we’re talking BlackBerry, we know that the Bold is the best ATT BlackBerry and the Storm is the best Verizon BlackBerry (though you’ll find more people to debate the latter than the former). So let’s look at what these providers offer in terms of plans and device pricing. That way, you can be sure of the true cost of ownership.

To start off, let’s look at the device prices. ATT offers the Bold for $299.99 after a $100 mail-in rebate. We’ll go ahead and assume you’re privy enough to take advantage of the offer. Same goes with Verizon, which offers the Storm for $199.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate. The important thing to keep in mind here is that the catch to getting these device deals is the contract. Each carrier will have you sign a two-year agreement, so the cost of ownership will cover not only the device, but the service plan over two years.

Over on ATT, the cheapest voice plan, 450 minutes, costs $40 per month. The data plan for personal use can be added for $30, but corporate users, those who have a BlackBerry Enterprise Server, that jumps up to $45 per month. On top of that, there are messaging options to consider. Unlimited messaging costs $20 per month, but we can factor in $15 per month, which affords users 1,500 messages to any user on any network. This is eminently reasonable for a single user. So all totaled up, the cost over 24 months is $2,040 for personal users, and $2,400 for business users. Add in the devices and that becomes $2,340 and $2,700.

At Verizon the personal pricing is similar. That’s $40 per month for 450 minutes, $15 for 1,500 messages, and $30 for the data plan. So before going any further we know that the Storm will bear the same service costs over 24 months as the Bold. The difference, of course, comes with 1) the device cost and 2) the corporate usage. For those on a BES, Verizon offers a plan for $80 that combines 450 voice minutes and corporate data. Add that to the $15 for messaging, and the total comes to $2,280 for the service, $2,480 for the device. This means a $220 savings over 24 months — $9.17 per month — over the Bold.

There are plenty of other voice options to consider, but they scale similarly. This isn’t to tout Verizon over ATT, or even the Storm over the Bold. It’s to show that no matter how expensive the device is, it’s the service that puts the biggest hole in your wallet. The $100 price difference between the Storm and the Bold doesn’t account for even half of the overall corporate difference over 24 months. Of course, it plays a bit bigger role in personal usage, because of the comparable rate plans.

This applies to Sprint, Alltel, T-Mobile — any carrier that sells phones with a data plan. You might scoff at the up-front cost of the device, but make sure factor in the cost of device and service over two years. Only then will you get a true idea of what you’ll be paying.
